L&Y Diagram 21 "Tin Tab" Brake Van (pre-order 28/02/25)

The L&Y Diagram 21 Tin Tab was a distinctive design of 10T Brake Van of iron construction. 383 were built between 1890 and 1901, following two earlier designs of iron brake van. The vans featured riveted iron sides with wooden ends and doors.

This model is available in OO and N as a simple kit, consisting of:

• Combined body and chassis as a single part
• (OO only) Separate cosmetic buffers and coupling hook, or slots to accept alternatives if desired
• Pre-cut glazing
• Brass wire for handrails, to fit into slots on the body
• Floor insert, to which details can be added (e.g. guard figure, internal detail)

The model has two options for the W iron/axlebox arrangement in OO scale. The "attached" option is ready to run with standard pin-point axles - 14.3mm length in N, 26mm length for OO/EM/P4. The "separate" option caters for OO modellers who wish to provide their own brass W irons, with a cosmetic piece consisting of the axle box and springing provided.

The brake vans ran with 8 spoke wheels throughout their life, and should work with widely available ~6mm diameter wheels in N and ~12mm in OO.

Optional coupler pockets are included in the kit. In N, standard NEM 355 pockets are provided, in addition to standard NEM 356/357 couplers. In OO, standard NEM 362 pockets are provided, without couplers.
