The transfers come on a light blue background to help you see the white transfers. The picture here show other colour backgrounds so it is easier to see the transfers.
The change from the use of illiterate symbols to using "LY" lettering occurred ca. 1902, following the introduction of the L&Y's bogie goods vehicles. Before the change, two illiterate symbols were provided per side with only the number plate having the L&Y's name written out. After the change, the illiterate symbols were replaced by the "LY" lettering.
Low goods wagons often only received number plates at earlier dates; later on, numbers were painted on the left hand side. Covered wagons received painted numbers on both the top left of each side, and in an appropriate position on each end of the wagon, depending on the design of wagon and date.
Tare weights were painted on all wagons.
Instructions on how to apply the transfers can be found here.
